Artist profile
Handcrafted Neon Art Inspired by Punk Rock With a deep-rooted passion for punk, the London-based artist Mark Illuminati draws on his counterculture past to create beautifully handcrafted neon works with a powerful visual presence that evokes an anarchic 1970s aesthetic. His bespoke art pieces juxtapose vintage and modern influences – he cites both The Sex Pistols and The Clash as inspirations – and the punk rock movement that continues to influence his work. Each work is expertly created in Mark's studio, located in the prestigious London area of Shepherd's Bush, utilising original neon glass and materials such as vintage flags before being hand-framed. Illuminati's jewelled and gold-leafed signature pieces incorporate centuries of craftsmanship and pay homage to Old Masters. Mark's ability to fuse contemporary and classical techniques helps to create works of art that transform any space with their electrifying presence. A major achievement in Mark's career was his portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II, which earned royal recognition. In 2020, his punk-inspired portrayal of the Queen was showcased in the British press after receiving the Royal Family's approval. According to insiders, Her Majesty even "burst out laughing" upon seeing the work, embracing the spirit of reimagining tradition.
